Prior to being admitted as a lawyer, Chess worked for an overseas government department, a Western Australian government department and his own business and investment. Chess worked with some prominent lawyers and barristers before establishing Ally Legal.
Chess enjoys voluntary services. He had voluntarily helped collect footy parking fees for Perth Modern School before the new stadium was built; he had provided free legal services to Law Access and Citizens Advice Bureau's clients. He has been providing voluntary legal services for Sussex Street Community Law Services since 2017.
Chess is a member of the Family Law Practitioners' Association of Western Australia, a member of the Law Society of Western Australia, and a member of the Legal Aid (WA) family law panel.
Chess holds a Juris Doctor, a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice, a Bachelor Degree in Engineering, and a Master Degree in Engineering.
